Psalm 89:1-52

Chapter 89
A maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. 1 A cultic song for Ethan the Ezrahite: I will sing of the LORD's lovingkindnesses forever, to generation and generation. I will make known your faithfulness in my mouth always. 2 For I said, "Everlasting covenant steadfast love will be built in the heavens. Your faithfulness is established in them." 3 I have cut a covenant for my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant. 4 Forever I will prepare your seed, and I will build your throne for generation and generation. Selah. 5 Let the heavens praise your wonders, LORD, your faithfulness too in the assembly of the holy ones. Selah. 6 For who in the heavens can be compared to the LORD? Who among the sons of gods is like the LORD? 7 A God feared in the council of the holy ones, great and awesome above all around him. 8 LORD God of hosts, who is like you, mighty in strength, with faithfulness all around you? 9 You rule in the pride of the sea; in the roaring of its waves you still them. 10 You crush like a slain Rahab; with your strong arm you scattered your foes. 11 The heavens are yours, even the earth is yours, Tubal and its fullness. You founded them. 12 North and south you created them; Tabor and Hermon shout for joy in your name. 13 You have an arm with power; your hand is strong, your right hand is exalted. 14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you. 15 Blessed are the people who know the blast; they will walk in the light of your face, O LORD. 16 In your name they rejoice all day long, and in your righteousness they are exalted. 17 For you are the glory of their strength, and by your good pleasure you exalt our horn. 18 For you are the glory of their strength, and by your favor you exalt our horn. 19 Then you spoke in a vision to your faithful ones and said, "I have set help upon a mighty one; I have raised up a chosen one from the people." 20 I have found David my servant; with the oil of my holy places I have anointed him. 21 With whom my hand shall be established; my arm also shall strengthen him. 22 An enemy will not exact tribute from him, and a son of iniquity will not oppress him. 23 And I will crush his enemies before him, and those who hate him I will drive away. 24 But my faithfulness and my lovingkindness will be with him, and in my name I will exalt his horn. 25 I will set his hand on the sea, and his right hand on the rivers. 26 He will call me, "You are my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation." 27 I will also make him firstborn, highest of the kings of the earth. 28 Forever I will keep my steadfast love for him, and my covenant will be faithful to him. 29 And I will set his seed forever, and his throne as the days of the heavens. 30 If his sons abandon my Torah and in my judgments they do not walk. 31 If they profane my statutes and do not keep my commandments, 32 then I will visit their transgression with a rod and their iniquity with plagues. 33 And my steadfast love I will not withdraw from him, nor will I prove false to my faithfulness. 34 I will not profane my covenant, and the utterance of my lips I will not change. 35 Once I have sworn by my holiness: "If I profane my covenant with David or change what goes out from my lips." 36 His seed will endure forever, and his throne like the sun before me. 37 His offspring will endure forever and ever, and his throne before me like the sun, 38 You have rejected and disdained; you have been enraged with your anointed one. 39 You have rejected and despised; you have been enraged with your anointed. 40 You have torn down all his fences; you have put his fortresses to ruin; you have profaned his diadem to the earth. 41 You have broken through all his fences; you have set his fortresses to ruin; every passerby on the way has been a reproach to his neighbors. 42 You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries; you have made his enemies rejoice over him. 43 Indeed, you turn back the edge of his sword, and you have not caused him to stand in the battle. 44 You even cause his sword to turn back from the Rock, and you do not make him stand in battle. 45 You have shortened the days of his youth; you have clothed him with shame. Selah. 46 How long, LORD? Will you hide yourself forever? Will you shorten his days, his youth? Will you cloak him with shame? Selah. 47 Remember how transient life is! What vanity you have created all the sons of man upon. 48 What man can live and not see death, who will deliver his soul from the hand of Sheol? Selah. 49 Where are your former lovingkindnesses, Lord, which you swore to David in your faithfulness? 50 Remember, Lord, the reproaches of your servants that I have taken in my bosom, many peoples. 51 with which your enemies have reproached you, LORD, with which they have reproached the footsteps of your anointed. 52 Blessed be the LORD forever. Amen and Amen.
